PLAID COLLABORATIONS
REPEAT

Formed originally with Mark Broom and Dave Hill. Several 12” were released followed by an album in 1995, ‘Repeats’. The Repeat sound is a distilled Plaid sound, like 'Andoid' but far drier with some 'Spanners' type complex rhythm’s and deep bass, but with an obvious lack of playful melody. The music is more purposeful, as engaging but is far more work to get into. It took me quite a few listens to get into ‘Repeats’. 'Drifting Sounds of Wikiki' off ‘Repeats’ was used to good effect by James Lavelle in his Mix that was released by Cream in 1996. A collaboration between Ed, Andy and Jonah Sharp, 'Soon' (also released as Repeat) was included in the mix 'Check-One' by Kirk Degiorgio in 1997.

‘REPEATS’ L.P

End Up’ sets the stage for an extraordinary journey, a journey far abstracted from techno of that time, what could a combination of Plaid, Mark Broom and Dave Hill possibly come up with? Full of very tight beats, deep bass lines and some complex rhythms, the album is as far removed from the dance floor as you can get and next to impossible to categorise. One obvious note here in the music is its relative staid moods compared to the 24-hour sunshine of most Plaid tracks. ‘Deathbed Visions’ is an example of near paranoia before it adopts a complex formation to its disposition. One of the best tracks is ‘Drifting Sounds of Wikiki’, it starts with the sound of an undulating ocean before the start of a repeated funky sample over which some ear catching beats enhance the mood, pulling away the beats just as they become too much. Some excellent keyboards play the track away to the end and an undulating ocean. The rest of the album contains tracks that really do demand the attention of the listener, usually tracks that require the listener to invest a lot before allowing any payback. Overall the album can be very rewarding, not accessible Plaid unlike the Kushti project, but die hard Plaid fan will enjoy it, possibly sticking the album on and pressing REPEAT.
